Recording Solo Recitals and Chamber Music Performances at Juilliard
I am writing to you to clarify a long standing policy regarding recordings of student performances. This policy has been determined by The Juilliard School and applies to all divisions. According to that policy “the use of any videotaping or sound recording equipment without written permission from the administration is prohibited in all Juilliard performance spaces. The use of tripods, extension cords, microphone stands or any such devices is strictly forbidden.” Arrangements to audio or video record these concerts should be made through the recording department.
We are well aware that this policy has not been strictly enforced. As a result, there were situations where multiple cameras and tripods were obstructing people’s views, as well as creating hazards in the aisles. When school authorities discover these, they intervene, resulting in an unfair situation where some people record their concerts, and others are prevented from doing so.
Juilliard’s Recording Department offers professional quality audio and video recording services, and we strongly encourage you to have your children’s performances recorded through the school. However, we will allow the parents (and only the parents) to record their own child’s performance. If you wish to do so, you will have to sign a release form and agree that the recording will only be used for personal use. These forms are available on the Pre-College website (see link below) and in the Pre-College Office. You may use a small handheld camera from your seat in the audience, but tripods, extension cords, microphone stands or any such devices are still strictly forbidden. Flash photography during the performance is also prohibited.
Please note that the Pre-College Office arranges for all chamber music performances to be audio recorded through the Recording Department. CDs can be purchased for a reasonable fee directly from the Recording Department. If you wish to videotape a chamber group, we will allow one designated parent per group to use a video camera, as long as a release form is signed by all members of the group and their parents.
We ask for your full cooperation in this procedure, which will prevent unpleasant situations that are out of our control and disrupt these significant occasions for the students. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this policy, please don’t hesitate to contact me for clarification. We are committed to making these concerts as enjoyable and productive for the students and the audience as possible.
Thank you for your understanding.
